Cody here. Back with another rule you need to follow if you want to get great abs.
The first two rules talked about both sides of the simple formula you need to memorize if you want to get a flat stomach:
- calories in vs. calories out
The first rule mentioned eating less and gave you some simple tips to follow to reduce your caloric intake. The second rule was to exercise more, and in that post I told you about a few little things you could do throughout a normal day to burn a few more calories.
The third rule is going to leave that formula behind, although you will burn more calories if you follow it. The third rule is not essential for getting a flat stomach (the first two rules will do that on their own), but it will make sure that when you do get rid of that layer of fat currently residing on top of your abs, there will be something special underneath.
That’s right, the third rule to follow to get a flat stomach is:
While you do currently have muscles hiding underneath your belly fat, they probably are not very big. This forces you to lose every ounce of fat above them before they will show through. Strengthening your abs is all about increasing the size of those muscles so they will show through even if you do have a thin layer of fat above them.
So, how do you go about strengthening your abs?
My first suggestion is to:
- Do 1,000 situps per day!
Just kidding.
Did you know there have been multiple scientific studies done in the last few years on working out and growing muscle mass? Did you know that many of these studies have come to one resounding conclusion that is going to revolutionize the way you think about working out?
These studies have concluded that working a muscle once, to exhaustion, is just as effective at building muscle as doing 3, 5, 10, or even 100 sets of exercises targeting that muscle!
What does this mean for you?
Well, it means you can save time and build muscle quickly by picking one ab exercise (or a few targeting different muscle groups) and doing it until you cannot do it any more!
Here is what I like to do:
- I pick two exercises. One targeting my lower abs and one targeting my upper and side abs (I describe actual the exercises I do below).
- I start with a number I know I can do of each. Maybe this is 5, 10, or 20 for you.
- I do that number of each, and then stop. I am done working out for the day. I like to do them right before I take my shower. That way, I have a routine to follow every day and I get to wash off any sweat immediately. (It’s also nice to see yourself in the mirror right after working out because your ab muscles will be at their finest!)
- The next day I increase the number I do by a set amount. I increase it by 5, but you can increase it by however many you want.
- I repeat this every day until I reach the maximum number I am able to do of each exercise.
- At this point, I just do as many as I can of each exercise, every day, knowing I am building as much muscle as possible in as little time as possible.
Here are the exercises I do to keep my six pack in place:
- Leg Lifts - These are great for the lower and middle ab muscles.
- I lay on my back, with my hands under my butt to stabilize me.
- I lift my shoulders off of the ground by only flexing my abs.
- I lift my feet off of the ground shoulder width apart with my legs straight.
- Now, I push my feet away from the ground using my ab muscles and then bring them back down close to the ground. You should feel a pull on your abs as your feet come close to the ground.
- Then repeat until fatigued.
- Side Punches - These are great for the middle and side ab muscles.
- I lay on my back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor.
- I lift my shoulders off of the ground by only flexing my abs.
- Now, with my shoulders off of the ground, I keep my hands up like a boxer protecting his cheeks and take turns punching from side to side until fatigued.
- Do these two exercises until fatigued, every day, and I promise you will have amazing ab muscles!
